How to root a Galaxy S4
2013-08-29, 6:54 AM

How to root OTA [ Version M919UVUAMDL ]:
  • You can grab Kies for its drivers here.
  • k0nane's thread on How to use Odin (3.07).
  • Install CWM, TWRP, or OUDHS Custom Recovery through Download mode.
  • Extra words from k0nane for successfully flashing a Custom Recovery in Odin 3.07 for the MDL firmware:
    Quote:
Uncheck auto-reboot, pull the battery once it's flashed, and try to boot from there. If it works, recovery-from-boot.p or install-recovery.sh aren't getting deleted/are still present.
  • Boot into the Custom Recovery of your choice. [Power + Volume Up keys when phone is completely turned off and unplugged.]
  • Flash ROOT_M919UVUAMDL.zip [Contains the older boot.img with new modules, root, and will stop the annoying "Modified: Reboot Now or Later?" notification from happening.]
  • Reboot and enjoy your rooted device on the M919UVUAMDL firmware.

You can flash back to the May 7th OTA boot.img using the entire firmware, or you can flash it in a zip.

***Update - You can now flash a source-compiled TouchWiz kernel that may better fit your needs here. It is compiled off of the MDL defconfig instead of MDB, but using MDB source.

Instructions to Install CWM, TWRP, or OUDHS

  1. Download Odin 3.07
  2. Download the TWRP Recovery TAR
  3. Extract the contents of odin-307.zip. Do not try to extract files from the .tar.md5.
  4. Run Odin 3.07.exe, and prepare Odin:
    • Check "auto-reboot", and uncheck all other options.
    • Click PDA and select the TAR you downloaded. Leave other fields empty.
    • Don't panic. Odin may freeze while it checks the MD5 signature of the TAR. This is normal.
  5. Put your device into Download Mode:
    • Power down fully and disconnect the USB cable.
    • Hold Volume Down + Power.
  6. You should now be at Download Mode. Connect your device and wait for it to be recognized.
  7. Click Start in Odin.
  8. Wait! When complete, Odin should appear like the following:

That's it! Your device will autoreboot.

FAQ

Q: How do I get into recovery?
A: Power off, and hold Volume Up + Power until you see blue "Recovery booting" text in the corner. Let go when you do, or it might reboot again.
